Foxburrow Grange Nursing Home, Colchester
Foxburrow Grange: a new class of specialist nursing and dementia care home is now open
Angela Rippon opened Foxburrow Grange at a fantastic ceremony on 5th July 2013. Working closely with Stirling University’s Dementia Service Development Centre, we set out to design a care home which would make a fundamental difference to the lives of people with dementia. We understood the importance of getting the design just right. If we could do that we would improve the life experiences and life expectancy of our residents. Foxburrow Grange in Ypres Road, a five-minute drive from the centre of Colchester, is the result. Equipped with the most innovative nursing facilities available, we marry our knowledge and experience with the latest research to bring first class dementia and complex nursing care together under one roof.
Our two-storey home occupies over 3,500 m2 and has 66 bedrooms, all with high ceilings and large windows. Each bedroom has an en-suite shower room and measures a generous 20m2. This, plus thoughtful interior design, create a calm and peaceful atmosphere. Foxburrow Grange was designed by award-winning architects The Tooley & Foster Partnership who have over 40 years’ experience of designing Care and Dementia friendly buildings, many of which have been flagship schemes like Foxburrow Grange. Residents with dementia
On the ground floor there are 30 bedrooms for residents with dementia and all are fitted with the latest Dementia Safe system. Each room has its own terrace which opens on to secure gardens. To keep it feeling more like home the ground floor rooms have been divided into two smaller ‘families’ of 15, and each one is completely self-sufficient, with its own kitchen, lounge and dining area. Everyone has a memory box filled with personal items which they can dip into whenever they wish.
Nursing home residents
On the first floor there are a further 36 bedrooms for nursing home residents, again divided into two smaller family units, each one having a view of landscaped gardens. There are two winter gardens and a large terrace which give them access to sunlight year round. There are ceiling hoists for people with high mobility needs too as well as a fire sprinkler system throughout the building.
But Foxburrow Grange is more than just a home, it’s a community hub. And community hubs are important because we want to meet the growing demands of an ageing population by delivering specialist care within a wider community. The hub is already up and running. There’s an all-day café, free wifi and daily newspapers and local residents are all welcome. There are also activity, sensory and therapy rooms, as well as a beauty salon and spa which can be booked by non-residents.
At Outlook Care we operate a zero tolerance approach to abuse and ensuring that the people who use our services are safe against such behaviour is our top priority. Please click here to download a copy of our Safeguarding Policy.
