Brentwood Hawthorn Bungalow CM14

Hawthorn Bungalow is a Registered Care service for people with Learning Disabilities.

The scheme houses 10 people and is a purpose built complex made of two bungalows around a courtyard, which both provide high quality services.

The bungalow is situated within the prestigious location of Burntwood Place, close to the centre of Brentwood, and is within easy reach of local shops, public transport links, day centres and places of worship.

This attractive and comfortable bungalow boasts a communal lounge and dining area, single occupancy bedrooms, bathing facilities and a kitchen where a cook prepares meals. People living here also have the use of a private garden.

Here’s how the staff at Hawthorn are making a difference in people’s lives:

Anne* joined Hawthorn last year.  Due to ongoing health conditions Anne has had to have several hospital admissions.

Recently Anne has shown how settled and happy she is here at Hawthorn. She is interacting better with staff and wanting to get up and be in the lounge with everyone.

Although her heath condition is still of concern and monitored, staff now feel more aware of the signs and can offer support and the right intervention, thus preventing a hospital visit or admission.

Communication is a challenge for Anne who has limited verbal communication but communication in general is improving greatly. Staff are able to understand more what Anne is trying to express.

Anne is  real character who is responding well to staff support. She is a happy, friendly  individual with a lovely sense of humour.

Jenny* has been living at Hawthorn for a number of years and this year she celebrated a special birthday, 70 years young.

Jenny loves her music and is often singing along or bopping in her wheelchair to the sounds of the sixties, Abba, easy listening music or her favourite Elvis.

So what better way to celebrate her special day but with an Elvis themed lunch with other customers and staff of the home!

The room was gloriously decorated with balloons and many different Elvis cut-outs and, of course, the music for the event was Elvis.

The delight and enjoyment was evident on Jenny’s face, who enjoyed the lunch, the music and all the wonderful attention for her special day.

The icing on the cake was a visit from a former member of staff who used to be Jenny’s keyworker who popped in to surprise Jenny on her birthday.
